Why do we need CLI VoIP
CLI stands for Calling Line Identification. This is a type of telephone service that is available in both digital and analog telephone services. In addition to this, it is also hugely popular in VoIP services.

Another related term for CLI in use is Calling Line Identity. This method helps to identify the caller for all inbound calls to any business or individual. In this process, the telephone number of the caller or the name of the caller or organisation associated with the call is displayed.

The feature of Caller Identification was initially developed for the PSTN system. Later the usefulness of the feature prompted others to include it in their businesses.

Important Note

“The reason that the CLI is popular among businesses is because of its data-gathering aspect. The businesses use the caller’s data from the inbound calls to collect data and also to improve their response to further calls.”

3 Users of Caller Identification

Mobile Providers

The feature of CLI is important for mobile providers for providing the voicemail option. The providers use caller ID to automatically connect to voice mail number.

As the voice mail number was related to the associated number, it did not require any further password. But due to frequent reports and cases of spoofing, this practice has been replaced with more secure ones.

Internet Service Providers

The use of Caller Identification prevents abuse of the account by unauthorised callers. This is the main reason for the Internet Service Providers who provide dial-up access service require the consumer to use identification feature.

To further strengthen security, many systems with dial-up access are customisable. They are programmed only to accept calls with specific caller ID strings.

Telemarketers often provide free toll-free numbers to consumers to call back rather than connect the call directly to the point of origin.

In many cases, the telemarketers spoof caller ID to remain untraceable. However, this practice is against the law. And therefore, the telemarketers using toll-free numbers also use caller ID.

CLI Routes

Among VoIP Routes, CLI Routes are one of the best ones. These white routes display the caller ID when the call connects to the recipient. The Caller ID visible to the receiver is actual information and not some random generic number.

The white routes are “legal”. By legal, it refers to the route termination on any end. All the connections associated with this route termination is in accordance with the law and also well connected to the telecom infrastructure of the concerned country.

These legal routes containing the caller information are also of the best quality among all the other routes. The audio quality these routes offer is of international standard. And in addition to this, they are reliable in terms of connectivity and any other technical aspects.

However, the cost of CLI Routes is usually higher than other routes. And the reason behind its high price is primarily the quality. Although several other factors may also affect its final price tag.

NON-CLI Routes

The NON- CLI Routes are also known as grey routes. The calls terminated through non-CLI routes do not display any information about the caller. It usually displays a blocked call or some random number.

Many countries have restrictions on grey-routes. Due to the limited information available on the caller, the questions arise on its legality and its termination or any possible violations.

Usually, these routes have impromptu set-ups. In addition to that, they further use GSM or cellular service gateways for traffic handling and call termination over the destination telephone network.

On the aspect of call quality, the non-CLI routes also result in decent quality calls. Although usually, the quality of cli routes are better. But, as previously mentioned, there are many factors which affect the VoIP Call quality apart from the type of route.
